Outrigger Canoeing (OC) is a growing paddling discipline in Ontario. Originally developed in Hawaii and Polynesia, OC combines endurance, technique, and adventure. The outrigger (ama) provides stability while maintaining a sleek, efficient design, and paddlers steer using a rudder and foot pedals. Whether on calm waters or riding waves, OC offers a unique and exhilarating paddling experience.
Club members are encouraged to try outrigger canoeing at their own pace—whether recreationally or competitively. While some paddling experience and safety training are required, OC is an exciting opportunity for paddlers of all levels. Those interested in racing can participate in several Ontario-based OC events.
Additionally, OC serves as an effective cross-training method for dragon boat paddlers, helping them refine their water connection, stroke technique, and endurance. Unlike dragon boat racing, where athletes paddle in unison as part of a twenty-person crew, OC training allows paddlers to develop independent power and technique. Many competitive dragon boat teams use OC for individual paddle tests, typically ranging from 150 to 660 meters.
Whether you’re looking for a new challenge or a way to enhance your paddling skills, outrigger canoeing offers a rewarding and dynamic experience on the water.
A TRPC OC membership provides unlimited access to our outrigger canoes during operating hours from May to October. Using our online booking system, paddlers can reserve 60-minute sessions at their convenience.
Note: Before using the boats, all members must complete a mandatory 45-minutes OC orientation session with a club coach, free of charge.
